Organic Mulch: Re-using Trees to Beautify Colorado Outdoor Spaces

Swingle's Organic Mulch

is produced and distributed by our Denver office. As a progressive full-service tree and shrub care company we are dedicated to the good health and preservation of Colorado’s trees. We know that proper pruning is only part of the battle. By producing high-quality organic mulch and making it readily available and affordable we are doing our part for Colorado’s roots and soils. The next step is up to you. It makes us happy to know that local wood is returned to it’s natural place in the cycle, just as it would be on the forest floor, while still looking decorative. It would otherwise be unnecessarily taking up space in landfills and not doing anybody any good.

Health
It’s easy to forget about the unseen halves of our trees and landscape plants. The often under-appreciated root systems also benefit from proper care. A 3”-4” layer of mulch spread over the root zones is one of the most simple and effective things you can do for the health of your landscape.

The most important reason to mulch in arid Colorado is to retain moisture in the soil. A layer of mulch will catch and hold more water, preventing run-off, and also retain it in the root zone longer. Studies show that evaporation rates are decreased by about 35%. Mulch is also an insulating layer, protecting the hard-working roots from extreme high and low temperatures. Weeds find it difficult to grow through mulch, and less competition means more water and nutrients are available for your trees and plants.

Rainfall tends to compact and erode our already dense Colorado soil. Mulch will protect and improve the soil texture and the tiny air pockets that hold water and nutrients for the roots. Over time, as the mulch begins to decay, organic matter is returned to the topsoil in it’s natural cycle. Increased nutrients and beneficial microbes create more fertile soil.

Beauty
Our non-toxic organic colorants are mainly composed of natural iron-oxides, just like basic rust. ColorBond technology allows the mulch to stay vibrant long after other mulches fade, and the colorants will not run when it rains.

Because the mulch retains more moisture, less frequent watering is required, conserving your water. Spreading mulch also greatly reduces the chore of weeding and the need for chemical herbicides. Our wood mulch will stay down in high winds and on slopes much better than shredded bark mulches. It lasts longer and even smells better. Eliminating the need to mow around trees and shrubs also eliminates unsightly and unhealthy trunk and root damage from the lawnmower.

The Process
Swingle's Organic Mulch is all local Colorado wood waste put to good use. Live and dead wood goes through a multi-stage process to emerge as great mulch. First the logs and branches are chipped in a wood chipper. These rough chips are then aged and rotated to eliminate any harmful tree pathogens and allow leaf matter to degrade. Once they are ready, the chips are reground in a tub grinder for better consistency and texture. This mulch is then screened and sifted to remove leaves and other fine particles. From there they achieve their final consistency and any desired colorants are added.
