Colorado Landscape Design: Plan Your Flower Garden

Date: 5/24/11 | Season: Spring

Fresh flowers are so much fun to grow. They can provide a sensory experience, wonderful smells and great textures which provides home gardeners with a sense of accomplishment.

Things to take into consideration when planning your Colorado flower garden:

Maintenance

How much are you up for? Some flowers require more upkeep than others. Be sure to match your flowers with the time you have to work with them. Echinacea (coneflower) is a very low maintenance perennial; zinnia (zinnia elegans) is a great selection for a colorful and low maintenance annual.

Water Conservation

If water conservation is very important to you, and here in Colorado it should be, consider planting water-smart plants and using a Xeriscape plan. Our precipitation levels vary quite a bit from year to year and we have many native flowers that thrive with our changing seasons.

Annuals or Perennials? Or both?

Annuals complete their life cycle in one growing season, so they need to be replanted every year. Perennials can withstand often-cold Colorado winters. They will sprout new growth every year after initial planting. Perennial flowers are often more expensive than annuals but if you have to buy annual flowers every year, the cost adds up. If you are going to plant in containers, annuals are more cost effective for yearly replacement.

Do you want to see blooms most of the year? – If so then be sure to plant a variety of flowers with different blooming schedules so you will have something gorgeous to look at all year.
