Do you have mosquitoes flying around? Mosquitoes can take all the fun out of outdoor activities. They bite over and over again leaving people itchy and annoyed. In recent year, mosquitoes in the United States have been proven to spread dangerous diseases.
West Nile virus is on the rise across Colorado and the rest of the nation. Infected mosquitoes transmit West Nile Virus. With all the rain in Colorado and moist conditions this year it has created more areas of standing water, so we are experiencing a high number of mosquitoes. It just takes a small source of water to provide a successful breeding ground.
What you can do to protect your family from West Nile Virus:
Your first line of defense against the mosquitoes that can carry West Nile virus be summed up in a few key points:
- Dusk & dawn are the times when mosquitoes are most active, so limit outdoor activities or take precautions to prevent mosquito bites if you must be outside.
- DEET is an effective ingredient to look for in insect repellents. Always follow label instructions carefully.
- Dress in long sleeves and pants during dawn and dusk hours or in areas where mosquitoes are active.
In addition to taking extra precautions to protect you, professional mosquito control treatments are an effective way to lower the risk of being bitten and exposed to West Nile virus.
